Cybernetics

Cybernetics are a huge part of this AU and are as common as having tattoos or having your ears pierced. Alternian cybernetics have a vast range from being only functional to something that's completely aesthetic. The most common cybernetics are what are known as jacks. They are cybernetic ports that connect to a troll's nervous system and have multiple different applications from connecting to cyberspace and being fully immersed to registration of firearms or a safer option for helmsmen to power machines.

  • A Helmsman is required to have Helm’s jacks to power anything since wetwear is being replaced due to cybernetics being more maintainable, more cost efficient, more maneuverable and safer for a Helmsman.

  • Virtual reality jacks are jack ports that connect a trolls brain to cyberspace, this also requires some sort of wifi and computer of course but using a virtual jack means you get full immersion without using a headset. These jacks are usually near the temple and are pretty common.

  • Tails are a cybernetic and robotic body mod that connect to a trolls spine for aesthetic purposes, they can look any way a troll wants them to but the tech is pretty costly. A troll can choose to have a tail that has real fur or one that looks mechanical or lights up, or even ones that look like demon or fish tails. It's all up to personal taste. Every tail is made specifically for the troll who buys the mod so it is made for your own body.

  • Extra limbs are a modification that is less common but not unheard of. They connect to the spine and central nervous system the same as tails. These limbs take more time and practice to maneuver successfully. Again just like tails they are fully customisable as long as you have the money. Yes, indeed you can have Doc. Oc arms if you wanted, or just a normal set of mechanical arms, ever needed an extra pair of hands?

  • Wings are an alternate to the extra limbs mod and can be interchangeable. The wings are usually custom made and are fully functional. they will allow you to fly and they wont use up any physical energy since they are cybernetic.

  • Holographic tattoos are a thing but are considerably expensive. They are tattoos that move on a trolls body in a programmed pattern they can be regular or blacklight tattoos or even be made with tiny LED lights that light up in a pattern.

  • Cybernetic claws are a body mod that replaces a trolls claws with reinforced metal and can be modified to light up or change color and length they can also be programmed to have different patterns and color shifts. Some even have specific mods with poisoned claw tips. These claws never break and are extremely durable.

  • Robotic limbs and prosthetics are different from extra limbs and are one of the most common mods. Trolls are considerably violent and losing limbs or fingers is common so replacements make sense. You can buy replacement limbs and fingers pretty cheap though the good ones cost more. They can be designed any way a troll wants as long as you have the money. Of course you arent going to get the best deal from a back ally technician.

  • Cybernetic eyes and eye mods are common enough, most are cosmetic. They can change your eye color or lught up in different patterns. Of course you can also get them to change your vision, you can get mods that pick up heat signatures, register faces from a databanks or even enhance vision so you can see farther like a sniper without even using a scope. If you cant see completly in the dark there is even better night vision, in bright light it dims what you see so it doesn't hurt your eyes. Also with seadwellers specifically it can fix their vision out of the water, it will recalibrate your eyes to be useful above water without aid, you never need glasses again or to put in contacts for that matter. Also you can get mods that take pictures or record that can save to a data chip, you can hook up to cyberspace and suddenly you have a camera roll.

  • Hive mind synaptics are cheap body mods usually used by feral groups of trolls as a sort of hivemind map to communicate over long distances.

  • Psionic cybernetics are used by trolls who do not have psionics. These are incredibly new tech and are still somewhat in development. They give trolls without psionics a cybernetic output center for their own psionic potential. Some of this tech also uses a special type of psionic batteries.

  • DAS Biochips or Digital Alternian Freight biochips are designed to store and digitize engrams for basic communication, but also enhanced personality constructs capable of independent function and re implantation into a new host body. These while not on the market are part of an imperial project that is the spearhead of digital immortality. These are not meant to be used on organic conscious bodies due to the fact the personality construct engraved on the chip will start to over tide host vital functions (usually resulting in brain death). Only a complete shutdown of neural activity can allow the engram to root itself in a host body (like a reboot). After the engram has taken root it’s personality will rewrite the entirety of the host brain and body and fully take it over. When not in use you can access these engrams through cyberspace and spin up the personality construct at any point.

  • Artificial Neurotransmitters are part of a a new line of tech used to influence brain plasticity. It is possible to make or remake permanent neural pathways using coprocessors and use them to have dopaminergic data manipulation. The emergence of commercially viable artificial neurotransmitters reshaped the medical field. This can help in the restoration of psionic abilities and void rot as well as many neurological disabilities trolls face.

  • Strife Specibi link your own neural systems with computer chips you are capable of learning complex skill sets in seconds. Then subsequently forgetting them again the instant they are removed. These are used to quickly master weaponry and fighting techniques. They can also be attached to a weapon license on mechanical weaponry such as firearms to unlock triggers.

  • Pain Editors are cyberwear implants reduce or even fully eliminate pain, it has enjoyed unwavering popularity among trolls who deal with chronic mental or physical pain. Heavy psionic users also find these to be quite useful especially if they are under constant work pressures since it staves away migraines and mental fatigue. Pain editors are neural coprocessors that inhibit signals sent from nociceptors to the patients lobe of the brain, thus preventing feelings of pain in the user. (Note: some models also reduce symptoms of fatigue as mentioned earlier).

  • Michalanious body mods and cybernetics are cybernetics and mods that are not listed but would still be plausible with the level of technology already listed. Regular piercing tattoos and body mods are also generally normal. anything can be possible with cybernetics, if you ever want to make a super out there looking troll in Aleph Null most things can be chalked up to cybernetics for ease of creativity, anything can happen.

Side effects of cybernetics

  • Immune response: like with any type of implant a body can reject it causing scar tissue to continue growing to the point it causes pain and inflammation of the surrounding tissue as well as possible interference with the techs electrical circuits.

  • Psychological effects: neurological implants in particular have the potential to cause unpredictable changes in the brain. Possible side effects include depression, apathy, hallucinations and sudden increase in addictive behaviors.

  • Implant over dependence: long term use if certain synthetic body part replacements can change the brains chemistry to make it accustomed to a particular type of implant. There are reported cases of permanent blindness after patients attempted to replace one optical implant with another brand.

  • Pain editor side effects: the effects caused by the pain editor are in some ways similar to symptoms of hypesthesia, including greater resistance to physical infliction of pain and the ability to ignore pain from wounds that could allow a user to continue to perform beyond normal limitations for a brief period. However of course this has a range of undesirable effects as well. For example you could push too far and some users are unaware of fatal or near fatal damage. The negative reinforcement of pain will cause a user to continue to do what they are when rationally they should stop and take care of what is happening to their own body. Due to this pain editors are only medically recommended to those with chronic pain or illnesses that will prevail for the majority of their lives.
